What does it take to win student campus brand manager of the year?

My final year of university came to an end, and with it my time as a Campus Brand Manager (CBM) at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). To top it all off though, I was awarded CBM of the Year for the UK after competing against three other finalists at the Enterprise European Head Office. Here is how I won.

Crystal award trophyAs a CBM it was my job to represent Enterprise Rent-A-Car on campus and recruit students, whilst continuing my own studies. My goal, when I started, was to increase the visibility of Enterprise’s brand on my campus whilst supporting and developing the relationships with my university lecturers and career advisors; helping me to reach out to a huge pipeline of talented students.

I created my own personal Twitter account for the role as well as a specialised account targeted at the university, which could be passed on to the next CBM at LJMU. This is where I retweeted ‘@ERAC_Jobs’ posts, as well as sharing all of the events and activities that I had organised to students, societies and careers departments, so that they could retweet them too. This meant I dramatically extended my reach on campus.

Social media is easily the biggest and best platform to use if you want to reach a wide variety of potential candidates. My tip is to be consistent, and make sure you follow up digital interactions with real-world ones too. Don’t be afraid to have fun with it too!

Chelsea with a coworker at a career boothThis is one of the reasons I also arranged various events from career talks and application sessions, to on-campus interviews. There is no substitute to actually talking to people about the great opportunities available at Enterprise! Other events that proved extremely successful were career fairs – the first at LJMU was a female and BAME event titled “Getting in: Getting on”, which helped towards increasing a diverse pool of applicants into Enterprise’s talent pipeline.

Improving your employability skills is one of the great reasons to be a Campus Brand Manager for Enterprise. I can say that my time management skills really improved during my final year as I learned to balance both my career, and my studies. I was awarded a First Class Honours Degree, as well as UK Campus Brand Manager of the Year – I’m really pleased that my efforts have culminated in this success. I’m also looking forward to my promotion when I return to working full-time at Enterprise, later this year.

My advice to all future Campus Brand Managers is that networking is key; you need to reach out to as many people as you can, as well as use your contacts to the best of your ability. My final tip: don’t be afraid to ask for help!
