Even though I don’t work for my own company, I think I can call myself an entrepreneur.
Why? Well, it is often said that being an entrepreneur is about taking risks – and relocating your place of work is one of the biggest risks you can take.
When I first joined Enterprise I didn’t realise the benefits of relocating and didn’t think it would be something I needed to consider until a few years into my career. But after just seven months I already found myself relocating, from London to the East Midlands, following a change in family circumstances. At first I was really nervous about the move but – now I look back – it’s clear that it’s the best thing I could have done for my career!
Before and after I moved, I had support from both my current and new area managers. Initial concerns – uncertainty over what the move would mean for career progression, whether same amount of opportunities exist in Derbyshire as in London – were dispelled as soon as the East Midlands Area Manager called me and took me through all of their available opportunities, the growth of the area and where I could fit in. Everyone’s concerns are different but Enterprise certainly made sure mine were not a problem at all.
Since writing this blog I have spoken to many other people that have relocated. At first it’s scary and like having a brand new job, but you have to see the potential you could have in the new location – which more than outweighs the risk! Taking risks is something that’s engrained into the Enterprise culture and a very entrepreneurial skill to have.
Relocating can take you out of your comfort zone and move your family to a new location. But the benefits are that you can build a larger network, learn new management styles and discover new opportunities that you didn’t even think were possible!
It’s certainly not a prerequisite for progression and many employees do just as well by staying in the same location for most of their career. But for those who do relocate, the help and support of Enterprise is what makes the transition possible and enjoyable.
So I know that when I go for the next promotion, whether it’s in another city, region or country entirely, my employer will do the same again – and the move will be a risk worth taking!
