A day in my life as a management trainee. Keep up if you can.

Right from day one, working at Enterprise throws you in at the deep end – you need to have a level head, a sunny personality and be able to multi-task efficiently, as it is a very fast paced role. Perhaps the most important responsibility from your induction is to act as the face of the Enterprise brand and ensure you deliver excellent customer service both on the phone and in person (regardless of how the customer behaves!). This responsibility extends to your ability to sell effectively and market the brand – as these core skills are impossible to act upon without providing excellent customer service – which directly impacts the branch’s revenue. You are also expected to manage the branch’s corporate accounts effectively, acting as a financial controller by ensuring they pay their invoices in a timely manner; as well as to take on a personnel role in training your fellow Management Trainees.

As time goes by

As your time in the branch continues and your understanding of the business evolves, you can increase your responsibilities by directly assisting your management in the running of the branch – as part of your training file, you are expected to “run the day”, which is essentially organising how the branch will operate its fleet, to whom it will allocate vehicles to and how to manage its time each day. Ultimately, the responsibilities are countless – incorporating customer service, sales, marketing, financial, HR and general management duties.

A typical day

The great thing about Enterprise is that no two days are the same, and I love the fact that I’m not sat at a desk all day. It’s a very fast-paced job – one minute, I might be dealing with a customer checking them into the vehicle, the next, I’m off to see a corporate account to improve our professional relationship and increase business with them (usually bringing along some pizzas or doughnuts on these trips helps!). There’s also the training file to get through, which sets all sorts of objectives to complete within your first year at Enterprise, such as hitting particular sales targets, arranging marketing events or attending various training days at our head office in Leeds.  Additionally, as you might expect from a car rental company, there is a fair bit of driving involved – anything from picking up and dropping off customers, which provides a great opportunity to improve your customer service and sales skills. Get used to driving anything from a little Toyota Aygo to a long wheelbase Transit van – even Mercedes, BMWs and Range Rovers.

Planning ahead

In six months, I should hopefully be eligible for promotion to Assistant Manager. My long term goal is to make it up to management level, learn as much as I can about the business, and then ideally move into Head Office to take on an HR-related role, should the opportunity present itself.

I’ve fast-tracked my career by joining Enterprise – do you want to do the same? Apply now to our wide range of paid internships, as well as graduate jobs.
