Haven't chosen a career yet? Here's what you need to do

Letter tiles being arranged by a finger to spell "work", "job", "career" and then extra tiles scattered about

After leaving College or University it can be hard to know where to start when looking for a future career. I had always been envious of friends who had mapped out their career from an early age and where the field they wanted to pursue was so specific.

Knowing that you don’t wish to become a doctor, teacher, solicitor how do you decide what’s the best path? Leaving University with a Human Resource Management degree but unrelated work experience meant that despite having found an area I was interested in it was close to impossible to find a job within that field. My search then changed from ‘what job do I want’ to: what company do I want to work for?

Researching who you want to work for and which company will be able to provide you with limitless opportunity is a great place to start. Starting as a trainee within a global and successful company meant that I could utilise the customer service and sales work experience I had gained and obtain the extra experience I needed to pursue my chosen field.

Here at Enterprise Business Support we have a number of success stories of employees who have adopted a similar approach. We have over 350 employees within our admin function and offer a wide variety of roles in our Aldershot offices. Georgina Crockford has been in our Claims Recovery Team for just over a year and having graduated with a Fashion Degree faced a similar dilemma to me!

“After leaving university with my degree in Fashion Promotion and Imaging I did not know where to start on the job front. I realised the fashion industry was not for me and wanted to find a company that could match my potential and allow me to progress.

I applied for a role at Enterprise Business Support knowing they were a well respected and large local company and was successful even though I didn’t know a thing about credit hire and what it involved. I’ve now been with Enterprise for over a year and I’ve never looked back.

Everyday I am learning something new and developing my skills. I work in a great team but also organise and run my own caseload, investigating claims and using my own initiative to solve them. Only recently I have successfully completed a face to face debt review with an insurance company, something I never thought of doing but yet thoroughly enjoyed it.

Without knowing it Enterprise was everything I was looking for, a career with great opportunities and somewhere I could progress and meet my full potential. I have so many options now and a mentor to help guide and develop me. Having felt very limited by my Degree I now feel the opportunities are endless!”

So not knowing exactly what job you want doesn’t need to be a limitation or a worry. Gaining valuable hands on experience in a successful company can open a world of opportunity.
