Big data and predicting the future: a day in the life of a Revenue Management Intern

Mo Fred

Revenue Management (RM) sounds like one of those job titles that could mean pretty much anything, so let’s find out what’s really involved by hearing what two RM Interns, Fred and Mo, have got to say. As you’ll discover, there’s more to it than meets the eye.

What is a Revenue Manager?

Revenue mangers aim to maximise income by controlling the price of daily rentals using historic data to predict future trends. You’ll track the rates of your competitors and keep an eye on the promotions they’re running to make sure that you rent your vehicles at the right price and at the right time.

What is it like during the Internship?

During the first few weeks of your internship at Enterprise, you’ll shadow experienced team members who’ll guide you through the software you’ll be using throughout your time with the company. Once you’re familiar with the programs, you’ll then be given a few tasks to perform every day, each of which will be vital to the team’s performance. Once you’ve settled in with your team, you will be involved in more important projects, given more responsibility and soon you’ll be a key team member undertaking day-to-day tasks and organising your own projects to benefit the team. Remember: you’re here to help drive Enterprise’s revenue.

What projects are the current Interns working on?

As we lead up to the Christmas peak period we are constantly analysing our current performance and comparing it to last year’s trends, so that we continue to grow year on year and maintain our market leadership. Alongside this there are long-term projects that need attention, like the renewal of reporting documents. As technology advances we’re able to obtain more detailed data on our European operations and that information is used to create reports that are sent out periodically to our team. Another existing project involves our recent expansion into the French and Spanish markets. This is more complicated because we have limited – or in some cases no – historical data to predict future trends, so we have to adapt our methods and rely on the way the market reacts to drive our growth.

What is it like to be an Intern at Enterprise?

Every day at Enterprise is different, you have lots of opportunities to be yourself whether it’s joining in charity fun days, climbing the O2 on team building exercises, going out for team lunches, baking cakes for an inter-departmental competition, or being the judge! Every day here brings new opportunities for everyone and if that sounds like the kind of career you’re looking for, we’d recommend you check out the current opportunities here at Enterprise today.
