BHM: We need to inspire, support and nurture the leaders of tomorrow

BHM

October is UK Black History Month. This year’s theme is ‘Proud to be…’. Throughout the month, we are asking colleagues of colour: What one moment, event or person stands out in your memory that makes you proud of your heritage?  Jane Muiruri, Assistant Manager in the East Midlands,  tells her inspiring story in her own words.

Dare to dream. Who would have thought a black man of African-American descent would be the 44th president of the United States?  This is one moment that stands out in my memory, which makes me proud of my heritage. Having been a young woman in high school witnessing such a historical moment that bears so much celebration, significance and hope, was incredible.  Barack Obama is an inspiring role model for people everywhere. This is a true example that change is possible to achieve. It’s not just enough to admire his achievements. It’s an opportunity to embrace how far we have come as a society and to carry on the flag from a long time ago. Change cannot come overnight, it’s a process.   It inspires me to keep the torch burning and see what impact – what imprint – I can also make on the black community, which fills me with pride.  It’s a moment that highlights that nothing is impossible and with a little faith and hard work there are no limits. It’s not just about the bad times. It’s an occasion to celebrate the struggle of my ancestors for freedom, one that directly shines a light on how the black community has evolved and advanced.

This year, Enterprise has marked Black History Month 2021 by hosting a series of weekly online webinars, recognising and celebrating the achievements of our black employees. I joined as a panellist on some of the discussions that were designed to inspire, support and nurture the leaders of tomorrow. We discussed topics including how to build resilience and grow in confidence, the importance of communication skills and how to leverage your authenticity and the community around you. You can review them on our YouTube channel.
